I guess I should check my own website more often. A week ago a fellow named Rick posted a comment requesting a review of the Burley Nomad cargo trailer and its suitability for a 1,000 plus mile tour. Rick, I don't think I have your email address (you can email me at danreedmiller@yahoo.com) so here is the review.
Absolutely you can tote this trailer on a long tour. I used mine on a tour of approx. 2,400 miles this year. It rolled smooth and held my stuff. However, this was the first bike tour I've ever undertaken, so I can't really compare it to either panniers or another brand of trailer. Certainly there is an issue of extra weight with a trailer, though it is pretty light, and in terms of handling is probably more transparent than heavy bags on the bike itself. Of course some people use both panniers AND a trailer, but i tend to pack as minimally as possible. One advantage of a single-wheel trailer like the B.O.B. would be one less tire to go flat, which did happen a couple of times. Par for the course though.
The thing I like both most and least about the Encore is basically the same thing: the ease of opening and closing the cover to get things in and out of it, which unfortunately makes it very pervious to rain and spray. You will definitely need waterproof bags for your stuff. Expect puddles in the bottom of the trailer. I don't care what Burley claims, the cover is not waterproof.
I have fantasies of a full set of ultra-waterproof Ortlieb panniers.
